My rackless luggage system

Recently, I was looking for a rackless luggage system for my DesertX. I considered a few available options and finally chose one system.

There are plenty of options for rackless luggage on the market. From all the available options, I considered the following:

  • Mosko Moto Reckless 40L
  • Kriega OS-BASE COMBO 24 (and then use my old US20 on top)
  • Xcountry Hero Ultra 36
  • Red Mamut X-DURO 36L

Mosko definitely looked like a top-notch solution with a premium price. I watched a few YouTube videos showcasing this set, and it looked like a great fit. My only concern was fitting without an additional rear rack. However, I decided to test other solutions before hopping into the most expensive one. The three other solutions were almost two times cheaper than Mosko.

I was looking at Kriega as my next option, as I have a heart for their products. I have used their backpack, US20 bag, tool roll, and small US5 bag for the roll for a few years. I was convinced it would fit, as they released a version specifically tuned for DesertX. My plan was to use OS BASE and side bags and then mount US20 on top. The biggest disadvantage I found was the lack of an easy way to dismount a single bag.

I heard many good things about Xcountry bags, which are produced by Polish TET linesman. However, I didn’t fully like their look, and it seemed to me they would have a similar problem to Kriega—the lack of an easy way to dismount a single bag.

I decided to try the Red Mamut X-DURO 36L. The company support didn’t know if it would fit DesertX as they didn’t have a chance to try it. After looking at their assembly instruction video and playing for a few minutes with the tape measure, I thought it might fit well. After confirming I could return them if they didn’t fit, I ordered the set.

They were 100% right on the video. After initial assembly, the set can be mounted on the bike in two minutes. Then, each bag can be easily pulled out separately. The quality of the set was stunning. Having the stock DesertX setup, I didn’t need to use the exhaust heat shield, and the set fitted well without a full-featured rear rack. The only tinkering part I did was a bit of duct tape to avoid scratching the short OEM rack on the back.

The only drawback I have found so far is that it’s not easy to put travel packing cubes into the bags. The bags are made with fabric coated with PVC, and there is some friction between the bags and packing cubes. It was not a big deal, but I will try different packing cubes to improve that part.

And the best part is the bags are made in Poland! 🇵🇱
