Want to ride like a Dakar racer? Go to Morocco and just do it! I’ve always been mesmerized watching Dakar riders dance through the dunes, and at some point, “that looks amazing” turned into “I need to try that.”
To make this dream a reality, I joined a trip organized by a Polish company that brings enduro motorcycles to Merzouga in the heart of the Sahara. I flew into Marrakech and then endured a 12-hour transfer – longer than usual because the High Atlas passes were closed for the snow season. A brutal start, but worth every kilometer.
Five days followed: riding the dunes and stony desert of the Sahara, and the surrounding mountains. It was everything I hoped for and more.

The photo below shows the highest dune I managed to ride to the top of. It took a few tries, but the view from up there made every failed attempt feel worth it.

The week also brought an unexpected bonus – a test ride on the Stark Varg, a serious electric enduro motorcycle. I only got a short session on it, but that was enough. It might just be my next bike.

Between riding sessions, we explored the market in Rissani – a proper Moroccan souk, lively and a little chaotic in the best way.

And then there was the food. I loved the simplicity of barbecued skewers with fresh salad, and the rich, fluffy complexity of couscous and seffa medfouna. Moroccan cuisine earns its reputation.

I’m already planning the return trip. The two options on my list: tracing the old Dakar route in full, or tackling the Trans Morocco Trail. Either way, the Sahara isn’t done with me yet.
